Wilbur returns to celebrate free electricity

Britain’s biggest energy supplier, British Gas, this weekend launches a pioneering new plan called FreeTime, giving customers free electricity between 9am and 5pm on Saturdays or Sundays.

The innovative plans are made possible by smart meters and are a first for the energy industry. Customers can enjoy doing more of what they love at the weekends, knowing their electricity usage is free during the day. The more activities people shift to their free day, the more they’ll save on their energy bills.

The launch will be supported by a major marketing campaign, which will kick off with a TV roadblock from 20:30-20:45 on Sunday, 3rd July.  This will include a 30” Brand TVC within ITV’s coverage of the Euro 2016 Quarter Final game between France and Iceland.

The new advert marks the return of Wilbur, the popular explorer penguin, experiencing the fun that can be had around the home with free electricity.

Set to Boston’s upbeat hit ‘More than a Feeling’, Wilbur helps us discover the wonders of free electricity and celebrate how customers can save by doing their washing, mowing the lawn or even just watching TV on their ‘free day’.

The multi-media campaign will be running across TV, radio, press, digital and social media.

Margaret Jobling, Marketing Director at British Gas, said:

“This is a game changer for the energy industry and is a first step to unlocking the real potential of smart meter technology. We hope that Wilbur’s infectious enthusiasm about all the possibilities free electricity brings will help our customers imagine how they too can make the most of this unique offer.

Customers on the new FreeTime plan will be able to choose which day of the weekend they would prefer to have free electricity. They will not pay any extra for energy used on other days.

Customers will need to have smart meters installed to receive the plan, which will be available from 1st July. To find out more about FreeTime, please click here.
