Browsers twice as popular as apps for mobile video

Boston, MA – 1 April, 2014: Larger screen phones, better video quality and 4G networks are the three most important factors for driving greater consumption of video content on mobile phones, according to Strategy Analytics. The study – conducted across the US, China, France, Germany, Spain and the UK – revealed that 42% of mobile phone owners report larger screens would make them watch more video on their mobiles. Better quality video (35%) and having a 4G network (29%) are the next biggest drivers.

Brits are spending more than ever on their mobile phones / Bownty

According to Bownty, the daily deal aggregator, mobile spending among Brits has shot up in the first six months of 2013.

Thanks to an increasing number of smartphone and tablet users, Bownty saw a 25 per cent increase in mobile purchases between January and June this year.

More than 40 per cent of transactions made through Bownty, which sources daily deals from over 100 sites including Groupon, Living Social and Wowcher, took place on a mobile device, compared to a third in January.

The future of media may be mobile but on-the-move television is still in its infancy accounting for three minutes of viewing a day, according to industry figures.

The average UK viewer watched four hours and four minutes of TV a day in 2012, the third consecutive year it topped the four-hour mark.

The proportion of television watched live continues to fall, reflecting the growth in popularity of digital television recorders such as Sky+, Freeview+ and Tivo on Virgin Media. [more…]

But publishers should not despair or in any way not put mobile as a top priority for their development queue due to fear about monetization challenges.

There is a reason why eMarketer upped their spend number for 2012 from $1.8 to $2.6 billion: they saw that some publishers (ie. Google and Facebook) were beginning to truly focus on all that usage, and starting to make money off of it.
