Grocery loyalty being at a low, no supermarket can afford to sit on the side-lines, especially when targeting women shoppers .. Valassis Limited

Supermarket loyalty is decreasing.  Just 12 per cent of shoppers claim loyalty to just one supermarket brand, with most (70 per cent) shopping across 2 – 3 different stores, a significant decrease from 22 per cent of shoppers in 2014.  This is according to a survey by Valassis Limited, the UK’s largest coupon and voucher services provider.

There is even less loyalty during the festive season, particularly among female shoppers, with just 10 per cent of women stating they would not shop away from their main regular supermarket.

Promotional offers are the deciding factor behind where the Christmas supermarket shop is done, with half of all women surveyed declaring they would switch supermarkets in order to use coupons or vouchers, although only one third of men say they are persuaded by such deals.

Research from Valassis Limited reveals UK consumers embrace coupons, save £3.3 billion

By using coupons and vouchers, Savvy UK shoppers saved £3.3 billion over the last year, based on new consumer research released by Valassis Limited, the UK’s largest coupon and voucher services provider.

Overall, 86 percent of supermarket shoppers use coupons with 40 percent indicating increased use from the previous year. Perhaps surprisingly, 50 percent of full-time workers revealed increased coupon usage, 12 percentage points higher than the previous year.

The survey found that 45 percent of shoppers are looking for promotional offers more than a year ago, eight percentage points higher than the previous year’s response. Younger consumers are more likely to look for deals with 55 percent of 25 to 34 year olds looking for offers compared to 28 percent of those 65 and older. [more…]

In the battle for consumer spend, discounts win

  • 84 per cent of supermarket shoppers use coupons
  • Consumers saving £3 billion a year through coupons
  • Coupons are used widely across all demographics.
  • Rise of the discounter – 30% of all shoppers are frequenting these stores more than a year ago.

Shoppers’ savings are increasing with over a third of consumers saving at least £5 a month by using coupons – up 10 per cent on 2013 figures according to coupon experts Valassis Ltd. This adds up to benefits of around £3 billion a year for coupon hungry consumers.

Retailers can expect some festive cheer this year as shoppers appear poised for a bumper festive food shop, with a survey revealing a considerable boost in consumer spending confidence.

More than three quarters of shoppers (78 per cent) declare they have no concerns about their seasonal grocery spending, according to the survey by UK coupon experts Valassis.
