Stephen Gately : Jan Moir of the Daily Mail managed to dance on his grave
Charlie Brooker says he is still struggling with the
"sheer scope of its hateful idiocy"

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/oct/1...

Jan Moir :Stephen Gately
Charlie Brooker sums up a lot of people's feelings in his column in the online Guardian.

The funeral of Stephen Gately has not even taken place. The man had not been buried yet. Nevertheless, Jan Moir of the Daily Mail managed to dance on his grave. For money.

It has been 20 minutes since I've read her now-notorious column, and I'm still struggling to absorb the sheer scope of its hateful idiocy.

It's like gazing through a horrid little window into an awesome universe of pure blockheaded spite.

Spiralling galaxies of ignorance roll majestically against a backdrop of what looks like dark prejudice, dotted hither and thither with winking stars of snide innuendo.

The unprecedented avalanche of complaints about Jan Moir's Daily Mail article has led the Press Complaints Commission to set up a special link for complainants.

Customer engagement - an inside track
New survey - brands are failing to engage with a staggering 77% of their customers
Marketingblog session with Steve Grout, chief executive of TBCH
http://www.marketinguk.co.uk/E-Commerce%20/Why-doe...

Steve Grout, chief executive of TBCH We asked Steve Grout of Targetbase Claydon Heeley 'Why does Customer Engagement matter?'

His reply was...Traditional marketing is changing and marketers need to find new ways to engage with their customers. Today’s customers are more in control than ever before and for a brand to understand their customer, they need to understand the motivation behind the behaviour.

Targetbase Claydon Heeley conducted an online survey of 1,200 UK consumers to find out how they value ten leading brands - Barclays, Boots, British Gas, BT, easyJet, Google, Lloyds TSB, Marks & Spencer, MBNA and The Post Office. The survey asked participants to score how much they value a brand - based on how engaged they are with the brand; and how much they love a brand - based on the support they show in return for that brand.

If you want to find out more about this survey contact Steve Grout.

The London Underground worker who was rude to a senior citizen

Ian Morbin was caught on camera shouting at an elderly passenger

Dirk over at Cow London points to a Financial Times piece that explains how your brand typically has about 48 hours to respond to a crisis and regain credibility. After that point, people generally won't visit your website to get your point of view.

Dirk references several recent incidents in London as proof in point, like the London Underground worker who was rude to a senior citizen (video).

Here's yet another fantastic example of where having the tools in place now (Twitter, Facebook, blogs) can make a big difference when you really, really need them. The clock is ticking.

I'm an easygoing Jedi, says Tube worker in abuse row.

A new town logo for Burnley?
Exciting or a deformed insect?
"People will think Burnley is a mess"
http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/4674098....

Burnley chooses controversial new logo

Burnley Vision has unveiled the dramatic logo that will be at the heart of its £110,000 re-brand exercise, as it looks to improve perceptions of the town and highlight the regeneration work that has transformed its once-maligned appearance.

The pictured logo consists of a sprawl of interwined, multi-coloured bands - illustrating the dynamism of the town and representing different elements of its character.

For example, its is said that the green band signifies the rural areas that surround the main urban cluster, which in itself is represented by the red colour.

"Let down the castle gates and talk"
How can a print magazine compete against a search engine that will provide recipes based on what you have in your cupboard?
The Web Takes No Prisoners : Gourmet magazine will cease publication after the November issue
http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/rich-brooks/social...

Gourmet is just one business that has been upended by the Internet You may have heard that Gourmet magazine will stop publication after the November issue. In a world where "gourmet" has been replaced with the more egalitarian "foodie", over-scheduled families prefer 30 minute meals, and search engines serve up (no pun intended) more than one million different recipes, it may have just been Gourmet's time.

How can a print magazine compete against a search engine that will provide recipes based on what you have in your cupboard?

Gourmet is just one business that has been upended by the Internet. Travel agencies, newspapers, independent bookstores, estate agents, the local video rental store...the list goes on.
