Pop-ups and ads that sit in middle of page are most annoying formats

The three most annoying mobile ad formats are those which prevent content being consumed, according to a new study by Inskin Media, in collaboration with On Device Research.

People regard pop-up ads (cited by 28% of respondents) as the most annoying mobile formats, closely followed by ads that sit in the middle of the screen (26%), along with ads that delay the page loading (18%) – all of which interrupt content being consumed. In contrast, ads which compete for attention, such as those that move down the page alongside the content (13%) or sit at the top and bottom of the page (8%) are much less annoying.

I'm lovin' this ad Halle Berry has done a few years back for her fragrance line, Wild Essence. In the ad, we see her walking through the jungle giving the viewer a come hither look. And, really, who wouldn't want to come hither after receiving that look?

Of the campaign, Berry said, "The essence of a woman is in body and soul and becomes more sensual in nature. With my newest fragrance I wanted to go deep into the rainforest where I could capture the primal richness of nature in an effortless scent." [more…]

Even though you might deny it, it won’t change the fact that you live in a world created by marketers. Advertising is a powerful force that has shaped our attitudes and behavior since the beginning of the 20th century when it got into radio, and the late 1940s when it got into television.

With great power comes great responsibility, but try telling that to someone working in the advertising field in the  early 20th century. Even today, advertising doesn’t try very hard to conform to moral standards, but after looking back at some offensive, racist and sexist vintage ads – today’s ads are as good as gold.

Movers and Groovers : IAB UK appoints Jon Mew as CEO

The Internet Advertising Bureau UK has named Jon Mew as its new chief executive.

Mew has been the IAB’s Chief Operating Officer since September 2014. He joined in November 2008 as the first Head of Mobile, before moving into the role of Director of Mobile and Operations which involved merging mobile into the core part of the business. This year mobile overtook desktop to become the biggest digital platform, in terms of display adspend.

Mew has worked across a variety of media and prior to the IAB held senior marketing roles at Freeserve and Orange.  [more…]

A global research study conducted by brand experience agency Momentum Worldwide and their shopper marketing design consultancy ChaseDesign has found that 84% of the UK now use mobile apps to purchase goods.

However, the results highlight a large gap in the customer’s retail journey with only 1% of UK shoppers using a shop’s mobile app whilst in store.  The WE KNOW MODERN SHOPPERS study found that 90% of the UK believes that mobile apps enhance their shopping experience and the main benefits of using a store’s app is for time saving (88%) and cost saving (80%). These figures show that consumers want to purchase items quickly and for the best possible price, but the in-store experience isn’t allowing them to do so.
