The shortlist has been announced for the second annual National Geographic Traveller (UK) Reader Awards 2016, in association with Qatar Tourism Authority. The 2016 awards has seen an additional five categories added, and a record 7,957 responses — up nearly 2,000 from last year.

Readers of one of the UK’s best-loved travel magazines voted for their favourite destination, airline, tour operator and more, with the winners announced during a ceremony in London on 29 November and in the Jan/Feb 2017 issue of National Geographic Traveller (UK).

Pragma’s AJ Chandrasena writes  ... Amidst the doom and gloom surrounding Brexit, one sector has seen sunshine: domestic tourism.

The weaker pound has made our shores more attractive for foreign tourists, but a large share of the uplift has been due to Britons choosing to holiday at home rather than abroad. According to recent figures, a record-breaking 7.3 million people have opted for a staycation this year.

A year-on-year increase in staycation spending of over 17% in 2016 is expected, amounting to a £2.4 billion boost to the UK’s tourism industry (valued at £127bn in 2015). [more…]

Hitwise reveals 60% of travel searches begin on mobile

Research released by Hitwise, a division of Connexity, reveals how important mobile devices are for travellers during the early planning stages of a trip. Research based on the online activity of 3 million UK shoppers, and 1 million mobile devices, reveals 60 per cent of all travel site searches originate from a mobile device.

The Hitwise research found that Brits are increasingly turning to their mobiles to kick off holiday plans, with 83 per cent of searches for the ‘best time’ to visit a holiday location initiated on a mobile device.

Logistical arrangements are also mobile-lead with 68 per cent of searches for ‘flights from’ and 83 per cent of searches for ‘flight status’ also made via a mobile device.Once a trip has begun, mobile is also the device of choice for travellers, with 86 per cent of searches for ‘places to eat’ and 76 per cent of searches for ‘things to do’ made on the go. Searches for ‘near me’ dominate, generated by 88 per cent of mobile searches.

As the holiday season gets into full swing, TIC, the brains behind BizTweet, one of the leading social decision software providers, has announced that the month of June broke records thanks to an increased number of tweets sent from airports around the world.

In total, 92,555 tweets were sent from airports during June, and the pioneering platform processed 19,766 (21.35%) of them.
