Air New Zealand says ‘cheers to 30 years’ flying London – Los Angeles

With over four million passengers carried, 84,204,720 miles flown, 800,000 plates of New Zealand Lamb served and millions of glasses of New Zealand wine savoured, this Saturday (25th August) Air New Zealand will celebrate 30 years of flying between London and Los Angeles.

As part of the celebrations the airline has launched a special fare to Los Angeles from £511 in Economy class and will give its UK Facebook fans the chance to win a ‘birthdaycation’ in Los Angeles featuring Business Premier flights for two and £1,000 spending money.

Always moving with the times, Air New Zealand has constantly reinvented itself to keep up with the changing tastes of passengers over the past quarter of a century.

On August 25 1982, when Air New Zealand sent a 747-200 to London for the first time, it was known as the “Ritz of the Skies” because of its luxurious interior and superior silver service.

Fast forward to 2012 and the carrier’s fleet is one of the newest on the route with state-of-the-art seating from the innovative custom-designed Premium Economy Spaceseat™ to the world’s only lie-flat Economy option, the Skycouch™. While product design has advanced, the airline’s genuine and award-winning Kiwi service is still second-to-none.

Over the past 30 years Air New Zealand has carried more than four and half million passengers on the route including hundreds of sporting personalities, a dozen princesses and princes and at least one British Monarch. Queen Elizabeth II took her first commercial flight in 1995 on NZ1 accompanied by 28 members of the Royal Household and 384 fare-paying passengers!

Air New Zealand’s General Manager, Europe, Chris Myers comments on the occasion

“While our London – Los Angeles route has been historically significant in connecting UK passengers to West Coast USA and then on to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, we’ve seen an increasing trend over the past few years for UK customers to choose us for point to point travel  between London to Los Angeles.  As the popularity of this direct route increases, customers are making the most of our daily flight, including our revolutionary seating designs and our friendly Kiwi-style service.”
