Today more than ever, your online reputation could be the reason behind fewer sales, fewer visitors, or on a good note could bring in more customers than you might imagine. With the internet, so readily available, anyone can write a review on a company or product which can be detrimental if you have a disgruntled employee or a dissatisfied customer.

It only takes one person to post on a product review website using your company name or your URL to cause you to have a bad reputation. These reviews often show up on search results above your own website which of course anyone looking for your products or your business will surely see.

Social media platforms provide businesses with a huge opportunity to improve consumer trust, according to new research by Trustpilot, the global online reviews platform.

Over a quarter of respondents (29%) say brands that are active on social media are more “human”, meaning they appear more approachable and helpful by having real conversations with customers online. Additionally, 31% of people trust brands more when the company has conversations with people on social media, and 20% check a brand’s social media presence when they are thinking about making their first purchase with the company. The DMA announces its latest findings into the relationships that customers have with retail brands, which reveals that Amazon is named as the favourite for one in four (25%) of consumers surveyed – with high street stalwarts John Lewis (14%) and Marks & Spencer (10%) the next in line.

While Amazon topped the list, just three of the top 20 are online-only – Amazon, eBay and ASOS. However, most of these have also experimented with in-store experiences over the last 12 months, highlighting the continued importance of a multi-channel strategy when it comes to retail customer engagement. Most notably, Apple came in 14th behind traditional high street brands including John Lewis, M&S, Next, Debenhams, Primark and House of Fraser. [more…]
