Most small business owners understand the relevance of fire safety, but not all of them bother doing fire safety risk assessments every year, as they are supposed to. After all, how likely is it that: a) someone from the HSE will bother performing a random spot check, or b) there is a fire.

The risk is probably low on both counts, unless you manufacture fireworks for a living or work in a similar high-risk industry, but this doesn’t mean you should forget about fire safety. If something goes wrong and there is a serious fire, do you really want to be responsible for a death on the premises?

472,000 small business owners will be working every day over the Christmas holidays without a single day off, according to a survey commissioned by business for sale marketplace, Bizdaq (www.mybizdaq.com).

  • No rest for small business owners over Christmas - 472,000 small business owners working every day over the holidays
  • Cost of employing staff a growing issue – 2.3 million small business owners not hiring additional staff due to rising costs of employment
  • Apprenticeships not considered an option - Only 14% of small businesses are planning to take on an apprentice in 2017
  • Holidays throughout year sacrificed – small business owners are taking 11 days less holiday per year compared to full time workers’ holiday entitlement
  • Small business owners in the North working more over Christmas – small business owners in the North will work an average of 1.4 days more over the ten day period

Small businesses waiting months for payment, as Tesco tops list of retail late payers

Ormsby Street analysis reveals the payment performance of some of the UK’s best-known retailersSupermarket giant Tesco has the worst payment performance amongst a list of the UK’s best-known retailers, taking an average of 105 days beyond terms to pay its suppliers. Iceland and Debenhams were the next two retailers on the list, taking an average of 75 days and 73 days beyond terms respectively to pay their suppliers. 

The data analysis by fintech startup Ormsby Street, also revealed that the average time taken to pay a supplier amongst the list of 20 retailers was 45 days beyond terms. With previous Ormsby Street research revealing that the average overdue invoice to a small business was worth £6,142, small business suppliers to some UK retailers could be waiting prohibitively long to receive payment on a considerable amount of money.

Sales soar for small businesses given ‘15 Seconds of Fame’ … iZettle’s Big Things Start Small campaign

Sales have soared for seven small businesses that received free advertising space on prime time television in November. Each company won a week's worth of advertising on channels including Sky Sports, Sky News and Comedy Central after entering iZettle's 15 Seconds of Fame competition in October 2015.

Hundreds of small businesses throughout the UK submitted 15 seconds videos about their company to be in with a chance of winning.  Six of the businesses that won the competition were chosen by iZettle. The seventh was up to the public and thousands of people across the UK voted for their favourite submission to win.
