The ONS retail statistics for January 2013 have been released. The figures show that small stores with less than ten employees saw a fall in the quantity of sales unlike large stores who saw an increase, particularly due to sales made online.

He writes ..  You may have seen this morning that retail figures from BDO, the accountancy firm that tracks trading across UK stores, have revealed that like-for-like sales increased 3.5 per cent in September, their fastest rise this year.

Furthermore, online sales continued to grow by more than 32 per cent in September and internet sales now account for about 10-15 per cent of all sales in each category. [more…]

However, the difficulties the high street has faced this summer, including the disruption the Olympics brought to the high street, and the millions of pounds retailers will spend on commercial rent this weekend on property will inevitably encourage them to think about the ways that they can reduce overheads.

The high street will always be integral to retail but this quarterly rent payment makes it clear that shop owners’ budgets are being squeezed by huge costs.


Survey : Rakuten reveals that the West behind the East for mobile commerce adoption

Today Rakuten, the world’s 3rd largest e-commerce marketplace, shared insights from an independent global survey into mobile shopping trends which reveals that countries in the Far East were nearly twice as likely as their western counterparts to shop via their mobile device, with 15% of Indonesians and 13% of Thais happy to shop from their handsets, compared to just 8% of Americans and 8% of Brits.
