Rebecca Jennings, senior client advisor at international benchmarking firm Global Reviews, sets out findings from a recent benchmark survey on credit card brands. The findings reveal how consumers discover credit card brands and make their final choice.

A new survey from Global Reviews has found that the nation’s joint favourite credit card providers are Tesco and Barclays. But the survey wasn’t about finding winning credit card brands. Instead, it took a deep dive into 'shortlisting behaviour'.

It asked how consumers search for credit card providers, how they make a shortlist of brands to investigate further, and how they make their final selection.

Barclays in Qatar loan probe
UK authorities are probing an allegation that Barclays loaned Qatar money to invest in the bank as part of its cash call at the height of the financial crisis in 2008, which enabled the bank to avoid a UK government bailout.

Neither Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr al-Than nor Qatar Holding is accused of wrongdoing. Their lawyer at Stephenson Harwood and their spokesman declined to comment.

The bank said the authorities’ investigations were ongoing. It neither denied nor confirmed the revelation.

Barclays can’t move forward until it goes back. The new Chief Executive, Antony Jenkins, is desperate to restore customer and shareholder trust in the bank but the investigations into its past behavior just keep coming. Third-quarter earnings last week were called uninspiring by analysts, but the real action is in the “other legal and regulatory matters” section of the bank’s results.

Contactless payments milestone for Barclaycard

New research from Barclaycard reveals that the contactless payment symbol is now recognised by the vast majority of Brits. Over 80% of the public – almost double the figure from a year ago – can identify the contactless symbol, with people in London and the North West the quickest to adopt the new way to pay[1].

The research highlights a huge shift in consumer spending preference, with a remarkable 61% of people saying they preferred using cards over cash to buy items up to £20.
