Excitement is mounting as the first round of voting in the Internet Retailing Awards reaches its conclusion with the long-awaited publication of the retail names who have been commended in the awards.

Commended retailers range from long-established traditional high street retailers who are adapting successfully to the demands of multichannel, such as M&S and John Lewis, and online etailers, such as Net-a-Porter, Amazon and Asos, who have built strong reputations over the last decade, to names that have more recently emerged, such as Wiggle and Zalando.

Brands who spoke at last year’s event ranged from online specialists such as Google and Zappos, to companies rooted in the physical world, such as British Gas, Debenhams and Chiltern Railways, for whom mobile is becoming an increasingly important part of their day-to-day activities.

We’re already in the process of recruiting an equally heavyweight line up of brands to speak at this year’s event. Our expert practitioner speakers, meanwhile, will cover off the latest trends and issues affecting every aspect of mobile marketing, from mobile advertising, apps and mobile sites, to Augmented Reality, location-based services, mCommerce and mobile CRM.

Retailers are in the spotlight again today with Debenhams interim results. The high street retailer has said pre-tax profits fell 5.4pc to £120.3m over the six months to March while like-for-like sales rose 3.1pc. Michael Sharp, chief executive, who warned last month that bad weather would impact profits, has blamed snow for a 6.8pc drop in UK operating profits. He said the second half would be better "despite consumer sentiment remaining weak and challenging market conditions."

The Laura Ashley ‘supplier abuse’ 10% letter. “Let’s play hard ball on this and not roll over”

by on March 25, 2013

Laura Ashley has been accused of “bullying” suppliers after it emerged that the retailer has demanded they pay back 10pc of the value of orders it had already agreed with them.

The letter, signed by Laura Ashley’s chief financial officer Seán Anglim and chief operating officer Nick Kaloyirou, claims that prices are being driven down by the “advent of online-only retailers and marketplaces”.

In a letter seen by The Sunday Telegraph, the home furnishings company sought an “immediate cost price reduction of 10pc” including on “orders already placed”.

The company blamed the “increasingly competitive” UK retail environment. It also said that if suppliers met its demands it would mean the company would not have to resort to “reviewing our supplier database”.

“Internet Retailing Expo 2013 (March 20-21 at the NEC, UK) is going to be bigger and better than ever” / Mark Pigou

by on January 18, 2013

Internet Retailing Expo 2013 - Visitor registrations are up 43% year on year - quite staggering - and a clear indication that the UK's online & multichannel channel retail sector is keener than ever to respond to the challenges in the marketplace.

It was sad to see Jessops join the list of closures on the High St., especially as their online business had in fact increased over 300%, so the message is clear - multichannel retailers must engage consumers successfully both in store and online as the age of "IRIS" ( Internet Retailing In Store ) is now here!
