Today marks the 1-year anniversary of the seminal speech by P&G's Mark Pritchard on cleaning up digital advertising, so its appropriate it's the day the two leading cross-industry standards bodies in the UK & US announce they're aligning many of their key initiatives to create a consistent approach to tackling fraud and brand safety across the pond.

"This issue of brand safety online is one of the very reasons the Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards (JICWEBS) was set up and we have a certification system to tackle this. It enables companies involved in serving online ads to be audited and show how their processes meet the industry agreed good practice principles specifically designed to reduce the risk of ads appearing against inappropriate content.

Currently 34 companies have received this seal for Brand Safety and we advise advertisers to check whether potential ad trading partners have this certification."

JICWEBS announces latest move to combat ad fraud

Companies can receive certification for using fraud-reduction techniques

The UK’s Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards (JICWEBS) – the independent body that defines best practice and standards for online ad trading – has announced the next stage in the move to tackle online ad fraud.

JICWEBS has published Good Practice Principles against which companies, such as publishers, agencies and ad tech providers, can be audited to verify their processes reduce the risk of fraudulent ads being served. Those successfully demonstrating that their processes apply these principles will receive a certification seal. The first ones are expected to be issued in Q4 this year. [more…]

British Gas, O2, Marks & Spencer, Cillit Bang, Asda and Center Parcs are among the brands advertising on "paedeo and incest websites", according to a report in The Sun, leading to questions about the efficacy of the media monitoring and targeting technology they are using.
