Research : Brits are likely to compare prices and look up product reviews while in-store before committing to a purchase

Mobile shoppers drive changing trends in retail purchases

Research released today by Hitwise, a division of Connexity, reveals how important mobile devices have become to in-store shopping and indicates why retailers must adjust their campaigns to meet changing customer behaviours.

The Hitwise research, based on the online activity of 3 million UK shoppers, found 77% of online searches that focus on price match and 84% of online searches that focus on reviews, begin on a mobile device. This compares to an average 62% of all retail searches that are initiated on a mobile device. These findings show savvy Brits are likely to compare prices and look up product reviews while in-store before committing to a purchase. [more…]

“Over half of the UK begins planning a holiday on their mobile” / Hitwise Research

Research from Hitwise, a division of Connexity, today reveals mobiles as the device of choice for budding UK travellers, with over half (52%) of visits to travel ‘destination’ sites made from a mobile.

Once booked, British holiday makers continue to plan their trip via a mobile device, with seven in ten (72%) researching ‘things to do’ from their smartphone.

The Hitwise data reveals Brits kick off Summer holiday searches at the beginning of May, with top destinations revealed as Spain and Tenerife, whilst Cornwall and Wales secure the top spot for British destinations. The number of UK people looking to take a trip to London, however, has declined 11 per cent, yet remains the third most popular holiday destination for American travellers[i].

The data is drawn from over 2.5m network transactions across 1,600 retailers spanning the travel, retail and telecoms sectors in the UK, US, CA and IE markets.

Headlines for May:

  • 23,000 sales each day originated from a mobile device (smartphone and tablet)
  • 8,250 of these were through a smartphone
  • 387 clicks originated from a mobile device every minute
  • 343 sales were generated through a smartphone each hour
  • £1 in every £4 of revenue generated for our advertisers in May was through a mobile device
