In the battle for consumer spend, discounts win

  • 84 per cent of supermarket shoppers use coupons
  • Consumers saving £3 billion a year through coupons
  • Coupons are used widely across all demographics.
  • Rise of the discounter – 30% of all shoppers are frequenting these stores more than a year ago.

Shoppers’ savings are increasing with over a third of consumers saving at least £5 a month by using coupons – up 10 per cent on 2013 figures according to coupon experts Valassis Ltd. This adds up to benefits of around £3 billion a year for coupon hungry consumers.

Morrisons is slashing the price of 1,200 everyday food essentials by up to 60 per cent, triggering a bloody price war that will force rivals to follow suit. The move by Britain’s fourth biggest supermarket is part of a £1billion plan to permanently reduce prices in a bid to see off the threat posed by budget rivals Aldi and Lidl.

However, the price re-set will also drag the other members of the grocery big four – Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s – into the fray.

George Dymond, who joined Morrisons at the beginning of the month and was expected to lead its new online grocery service, has unexpectedly resigned.

Operations director Dymond was hired last autumn from Coles supermarkets in Australia, where he was group general manager of merchandise. Prior to that he was trading director at Carphone Warehouse.

The Financial Times reports that the resignation centres on a disagreement on the nature of the role, and that Morrisons had been in talks with Dymond about an alternative position.  Read On

Morrisons is set to launch its new Christmas TV advertising campaign

Morrisons is set to launch its new Christmas TV advertising campaign this Friday 8th November during the prime-time slot of ITV’s Coronation Street. The campaign, featuring the nation’s favourite duo, Ant & Dec, focuses on how Morrisons’ expertise helps to create a sumptuous Christmas spread, with a pinch of festive magic thrown in for good measure.

The ad sees Ant & Dec drawn into an enchanting winter wonderland by a playful Morrisons’ gingerbread character, who proceeds to sing to Ant & Dec about the array of festive foods. Set to the tune of the Disney classic ‘Be Our Guest’ from Beauty and The Beast, with rewritten lyrics, the gingerbread man dances around a table laden with Morrisons’ festive treats.
