Young football fans shunning TV in favour of online for footy info

On what is traditionally the biggest day for football TV viewing figures, younger generations of fans this Boxing Day will turn to online instead of TV to get their fix of footy info, research by Statista finds.

88% of 18–24-year-old football fans will go online this Boxing Day to check scores and read match reports, while only 63% will turn on the TV, 25% will read news in print, 18% will get their info from the radio and 40% will get information from other sources.

UK supermarket Morrisons is tapping into a pie-based scandal at non-league football side Sutton FC, offering the club’s former reserve keeper an ambassadorial role.

Forty-six-year-old Wayne Shaw is currently under investigation from the FA under allegations of illegal gambling all revolving around his half time meal, a greasy pie, dined upon during Arsenal's 2-0 FA Cup victory on Monday.

Earlier this year the NBA recently announced it was allowing its basketball franchises to attract shirt sponsors for the first time, Get Me Media’s Pete Davis hopes they won’t follow the football route and only sell to the highest bidder.

For years, the big US sports franchises – basketball, American football, baseball, ice hockey, etc – have protected their first-team shirts from sponsorship. There have been plenty of deals elsewhere, including individual player endorsements and practice shirt sponsors, but the main shirts have remained sacrosanct, unsullied by commercial forces.

But it’s clear that times are changing, with the recent news of the NBA opening up basketball team shirts to sponsorship.

MEC brokers TV sponsorship first for Volvic with Channel 4

4 Sales and MEC today announce a new seven-figure sponsorship deal with mineral water brand Volvic. The deal, which runs from Tuesday 1st March until the end of 2016, represents the first time Volvic has sponsored programming on TV and the first time it has supported its natural water and flavoured Aquadrinks sub-brands with masterbrand advertising.

Volvic will sponsor Unstoppable Moments on 4, a brand new programming strand that will run across Channel 4 programming and will feature new series from Guy Martin, the brand new series of The Island and the upcoming reality survival series Eden.

Unstoppable Moments also includes a number of popular E4 shows such asHow I Met Your Mother, The Inbetweeners plus The Goldbergs and 2 Broke Girls.
