USA now prime location for UK retailers in global e-commerce, finds research from Global-e

A survey of 250 British retail decision-makers released today by Global-e, the cross-border e-commerce specialist, reveals that the majority (59%) of British retailers consider the US to be the most important retail e-commerce market.

However, less than half (44%) of UK retailers currently sell to shoppers in the US and relatively few have plans to do so in the future. Just 13% of British retailers are currently planning to start selling to shoppers in the US. [more…]

Time Out Group PLC (AIM: TMO), the global multi-platform media and e-commerce business with food & cultural markets, is pleased to announce that it has signed a conditional lease agreement for a new Time Out Market at 106 Commercial Street in London’s vibrant Shoreditch district. The agreement is subject to planning permission being received on the site.

This will be the first Time Out Market in London, following the success of its flagship market in Lisbon which opened in May 2014, and its newly signed lease in Porto. In the first six months of 2016, the Lisbon market reported strong YoY proforma revenue growth of 106%, record levels of visitors (1.3 million) and has been EBITDA positive in each month of the current financial year. No Brexit plans in place for 60% of British retailers, finds research from Global-e

A survey of 250 British retail decision-makers released today by Global-e, the cross-border e-commerce specialist, reveals that 3 in 5 (60%) retailers have made no business plans whatsoever should a Brexit go ahead in June; a little over a month away. In fact, 96% of retail sole traders have made no business provisions at all for a potential Brexit.

Among the cross-section of retail businesses surveyed, medium-sized retailers (100-249 employees) are most prepared for a potential Brexit with over a half (54%) saying they have made plans as a business already. This group was also most in favour of a Brexit, with 54% saying that they will vote to leave the European Union, compared to under a quarter (24%) of respondents in companies with more than 500 employees. Fit to bust  ... It is estimated that approximately 20-40% of all clothing purchased online is returned, and these numbers vary drastically across categories. While t-shirts and menswear get a low rate of return, dresses can account for 60% of the returns.

Initially retailers focussed on making their delivery models more flexible, encouraging shoppers to buy, try and return. The problem with this solution is that no matter how easy the retailer return/delivery policy is, customers still need to invest time and effort in making that return, and often end up in a physical store for the final purchase. This is evident in the rise of click and collect, particularly in fashion.

Argos has stepped up its digital transformation by confirming plans for 10 concession outlets within Sainsbury's stores.

The retailer, which makes products from electronics to garden furniture, and the supermarket chain see the partnership as an opportunity to boost customer numbers, convenience and choice for shoppers, despite both offering general merchandise (GM) including TVs.
