Shops are scaling back their loyalty card schemes so brutally that you now need to spend thousands to get anything worthwhile from them.

Although nearly 46.5million of us have at least one loyalty card in our wallets, retailers have decided they aren’t the best way to keep customers coming back. Many are cutting everyday prices instead.

Nectar upset loyal customers in April last year by halving the value of the points you get for shopping at Sainsbury’s.
