Wm Morrison, the supermarket chain, has appointed Trevor Strain as finance director, succeeding Richard Pennycook.

Betfair, the operator of the eponymous betting exchange, has stressed it will focus on regulated gambling markets as it has increased its medium term dividend target to 40pc of post-tax profits, identified about £20m of savings and reported first-half underling earnings down 2pc to £42.3m.

Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct sportswear chain appears to be in a better run of form than his team, Newcastle – boosted by the London Olympics. It’s posted a 22.5pc rise in first-half revenues to £1.09bn and pre-tax profits up almost 25pc to £125m.

Centamin is having a pretty torrid time in Egypt by all accounts, following what it calls an “illegal retrospective claim” from Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation for $65m of diesel fuel. It’s suspending operations at its Sukari mine.
