Heavenly Pies!

Best Wishes, Neil.

Poole’s – serving pies for 165 years.

Britain’s oldest pie manufacturer, Poole’s Pies, are asking local people from the ‘world capital of pies’ to help them celebrate a significant milestone in the history of pie making.

This year marks the 165th anniversary of Pooles Pies, and to commemorate the landmark, the iconic manufacturers are asking pie lovers in the North West to tell them about their Poole’s memories, pictures and memorabilia.

Neil Court-Johnston

These will then be used to tell the ‘Story of Pooles’ as new owner, Neil Court-Johnston, explains: “Wigan is the home of pies and I’m sure there are some great pie-related stories out there. We’d like everyone to search their homes from top to bottom, raid their sheds and comb through the long-forgotten items in their lofts and attics to find any pictures or memorabilia they have of Pooles Pies.”

Founded in 1847, by Margaret Poole, the company has experienced a varied history from humble beginnings to a multi-million pound take-over. Now the company are looking to compile a comprehensive Poole’s biography.

Mr Court-Johnston continued: “As the country’s oldest pie company we have a really interesting tale to tell, not just about our company but also about the region. We’re particularly interested in finding out about the company between 1881 and 1973, during which period there has been very little information recorded. But we’re also hoping to fill all the gaps in our history. Perhaps you or a relative used to work at the Poole’s factory? Maybe you can remember eating our pies as a child? Whatever your story is we’d like to hear from you.”

The contributions will also be displayed at an exhibition detailing the story of Poole’s, from its origins through to its modern day pie production.

All of the submissions will be considered before a final shortlist of items to be featured in the exhibition is drawn up.

People should to send their pictures, memories and descriptions of items to

  1. Discovered Pooles whilst working in Wigan and must say that I have never had a better custard pie than those from Pooles. There have been some close ones though, and as I live in South Manchester I was delighted when Pooles opened in Stockport though not for long unfortunately.
